Tariq Alvi, Happy Birthday, 2005, installed at the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts California College of the Arts, San Francisco. (Yes an impeccably iced wheelchair.) Dodie Bellamy, from her “New Age date” with Tariq: Normal life has been suspended and we’ve entered into giddy birthdayland. Even though the lights are dimmed, colors look more vivid, and even though the music’s fast and movements are quick, time feels slowed down, as if for one moment, all over the world, it is everybody’s birthday. For Joanna, who celebrates her birthday today.
