Robert Smithson (1938-1973) Domus 531 / February 1974 page detail. The Amarillo Ramp, Texas started by Robert Smithson and completed by Richard Serra, Nancy Holt, and Tony Shafrazi. via Domusweb

This isn’t Amarillo Ramp, but Smithson’s Broken Circle/Spiral Hill, in a quarry outside of Emmen, The Netherlands. It was completed in 1971, while he was very much alive.

Rumor has it she passed away yesterday. We spoke with her a few times over the years, and thought about her work a lot more than that. She was such a direct and generous person, and an unflinching artist and poet. A good human being. We’d never even considered a future without her in it, and are absolutely heartbroken to know we won’t meet her again.
